Accessing Your Website

How do I access my website?

To view your website, simply go to the domain you were given. Going to the IP address will not get you to your website. To upload files you must use either SCP or SFTP. These both use encrypted log-ins so that no one can capture your password when you enter it. You will need to log in with your NetID/NetPassword.

WinSCP is a free, easy-to-use application that can be utilized for transferring files to your website. While ITS does not support WinSCP, instructional guides for installing, connecting, and uploading files using WinSCP can be found here. After installing and starting WinSCP, select the appropriate File Protocol (SCP or SFTP), then enter the hostname (e.g. its.msstate.edu), username (your NetID), and password (your NetPassword) before clicking Login. When connecting to the server for the first time, you'll see a popup with a warning about a key; click Yes to continue connecting. After connecting, you will see your file directory on the left side and the website directory on the right side. Anything copied into the website directory will be on the website.

Is Telnet or FTP allowed?

Telnet and FTP are not allowed as these are unsecured protocols.

Is SSL available?

SSL is required and enabled by default. We will install a free SSL certificate that works with most applications and browsers. If your application requires a Thawte or Verisign certificate, you will be charged for the certificate.
