Have you ever tried sharing a file with a colleague at another organization via email, but the message failed to send due to security reasons or the size of the file? MSU ITS offers a short-term, secure file sharing solution that gives you the control to decide who can access the files and for how long. This secure file sharing system is called FileSender. FileSender is a replacement for the previous storage system, Filelocker, which was deprecated on December 1, 2025.
FileSender is an easy-to-use service that will encrypt your data and share it with only your intended recipients. Important notes:
- FileSender allows MSU students, faculty, and staff to share files and data with other MSU students, faculty and staff, as well as anyone external to MSU.
- FileSender has a 4 gigabyte storage quota for users, with a 20 day expiration limit on files and data.
- FileSender also has customizable notifications giving you the options to be notified upon file uploads, successful delivery to recipients, when the file has been downloaded by recipients, and much more.
- In addition to sharing data, FileSender also allows users to request file transfers from other users.
While it may not be necessary to encrypt all of your files and data, there are some data types that warrant extra caution particularly when sharing or transferring files back and forth between users and/or devices. For example, confidential and sensitive files, legal data, human resources data, medical records, and financial data are just a few of the most prominent data types that should be shared with extra caution. When sharing unencrypted data, whether it be through email, text, or other methods, there is always a risk that your data can fall into the wrong hands when traveling across the internet. By using FileSender to encrypt and share your data, you can rest assured that your data will remain secure throughout delivery to your intended recipients.
